What are the Different Types of Screw Guns?

There are 4 main types of screw guns:

1. Collated Screw Guns

Metabo HPT SuperDrive Collated ScrewdriverA collated screw gun highlights one particular feature – depth. It’s capable of sinking a screw up to two inches below the surface of the wood.

This type of screw gun is commonly used for drywall hangers, framing, furniture, and deck building. The main problem with these types of constructions is that the screws can come loose and create problems in the long run.

A collated screw gun will help penetrate deeper for a more stable hold.

Drywall Screw Guns are identifiable by the nose wherein nails can be fitted, and an adjustable head section controls the depth.

They are specially designed so that the screw sinks just the right depth into the drywall – not too deep that it cracks or breaks the wall, nor too shallow that the screws easily become loose.

4. Corded or Cordless: what’s the difference?

Corded Screw Guns

Makita FS6200 corded ScrewdriverCorded screw guns have a higher power output than cordless ones. Because they have a never-ending 110-volt supply of electricity, you can use it for an unlimited amount of time as long as you’re near an electric outlet. They are also significantly more lightweight than cordless screw guns.

The obvious downside, however, is their lack of flexibility. Your movements will be limited based on the length of the cord and the electric outlet’s location.

The downside is that they have less speed and power, limited to a maximum of 20-volts at a time. And since batteries are significantly heavy, you’ll be carrying around a bulky tool that may affect your efficiency.
